Freeport reports work accident

PT Freeport Indonesia reported on Friday a work accident during an approved maintenance activity in the deep ore zone (DOZ) of its underground mine.

Wet ore material (wet muck) flowed from an ore bin covering a truck and its driver, the company said in a press statement.

The circumstances involved in the incident are inconsistent with the company?s established safety protocol for handling wet muck and are being investigated.

It stated that the accident was not the result of any collapse of the mine tunnel, as has been incorrectly reported, and does not in any way reflect upon the integrity of the mine.

The maintenance activity was only resumed a week ago after being stopped for several weeks, following a tunnel collapse on the training facility of the Big Gossan mine that caused the death of 28 workers.

The truck driver, who is in critical condition, has been taken to Tembagapura Hospital. ?We are saddened by this accident and are praying for our fellow worker and his family at this difficult time,? the company said.
