An army member was wounded on Saturday near Timika, Papua, when unidentified gunmen assaulted a car belonging to copper and gold miner PT Freeport Indonesia (PTFI) which he was riding, Tempo Newsroom reported.
Private Edi and three other army officers were on their way from Tembagapura to Timika when the incident occurred. They were members of the army group tasked with protecting PTFI?s vital projects in Mimika regency.
Trikora military commander Maj Gen Mahidin Simbolon said the attackers might belong to the group which had planned another bloody assault in Timika on Sept 1.
Mahidin had said earlier those involved in the Sept 1 assault, in which three school teachers of PTFI were killed, were suspected to be followers of Free Papua Organization (OPM). (*)
