Freeport to "stabilize" Wanagon Lake

Friday, July 14 2000 - 04:00 AM WIB

Gold giant firm PT Freeport Indonesia said that it had been taking a "stabilization" measure in the Wanagon Lake in West Papua province since July 12 to avoid landslide to occur in the future amid current heavy rain fall.

Freeport spokeswoman Yuli Ismartono said that the stabilization program had been approved by the Ministry of Mines and Energy.

She said that during the period of the stabilization program, Freeport had to make a comprehensive report regularly.

Freeport had been temporarily disallowed to continue disposing its overburden waste material into the Wanagon Lake following the fatal landslide incident that occurred in early May.

The company now has to dispose its overburden into the Carstensz area which only has a capacity of 5 percent, compared to 95 percent capacity at Wanagon. (*)
