Copper and gold producer PT Freeport Indonesia (FI) has been asked to help finance the construction of roads in Papua, Neraca daily reported Monday.
FI should take part in the so-called Trans Papua project because the government could not afford to complete it, the paper quoted Papua provincial council member Paskalis Kossay as saying on Sunday.
Trans Papua covered Jayapura-Wamena, Puncak Jaya-Paniai, and Timika-Merauke -Jayapura road, Paskalis said.
FI, a subsidiary of the United States' mining giant Freeport McMoRan Copper & Gold Inc., operates the huge Grasberg mine in Papua. (*)
