The gold and copper mining giant in Irian Jaya, PT Freeport Indonesia, welcomed the decision of the Minister of Environment Nabiel Makarim of not to force the company to develop pipeline for its tailing waste materials.
Freeport spokesman Siddartha Moersjid told Petromindo.com that the move was in line with the company?s 1997 environmental impact assessment.
?We appreciate the decision of the minister,? Siddharta said.
Earlier on Monday, Nabiel told House of Representatives commission VIII that Freeport would not be obliged to develop pipeline for its tailings because the hilly condition of the company?s site was impossible for such an infrastructure, and would be even dangerous particularly if there was earthquake or sabotage.(Godang)
