Gold mining giant PT Freeport Indonesia welcomes the interest of the Papua administration to have a stake in the company, according to Freeport Indonesia public relations manager Sidaarta Moersjid.

But Sidaarta said that the Papua administration had not yet made any proposal to the company.

Sidaarta was responding to an earlier report at Petromindo quoting Papua Governor Jaap Solossa as saying that the province had a strong interest to own a stake in Freeport.

But Jaap admitted that the administration had yet to make the necessary calculation. He added that the administration had yet to talk with the provincial House of Representatives.

Freeport has a large mining area in the Papua province. The company is providing one percent of its profit to the local administration. (Godang)
