State-owned oil and gas firm Pertamina is currently conducting a detailed feasibility study (FS) for the planned 120 MW waste-based power plant in the Bantar Gebang waste landfill area, in Bekasi, and expects to complete it by the end of this year, said Salis Aprilian, Senior Vice President for Engineering and Operation Management at the Gas Directorate of Pertamina.
Pertamina and PT Godang Tua Jaya agreed in March of this year to develop the power plant, which will use city wastes as feedstocks to produce renewable energy in the form of gasification plasma claimed to be able to generate 120 MW of electricity. The two have assigned Solena Fuels Corporation to provide the technology.
The power plant project will require about US$300 million investment, and is projected to start commercial operation in 2016.
The project is believed to become a technological breakthrough in solving the problem of city wastes and the problem of power shortage. The government has targeted that by year 2025 the use of renewable energy in Indonesia will reach a level of about 25 percent.
