Fuel filling stations to be required to sell CNG

All gasoline stations in Jakarta will be required to sell compressed natural gas (CNG) under the memorandum of understanding (MOU) signed by the Jakarta administration and three major fuel distributors PT Pertamina, PT Shell Indonesia and PT Petronas Niaga on Wednesday, Kompas reported on Thursday.

Speaking to reporters after the signing of the MOUs, Vice Governor Fauzi Wibowo said that the gasoline stations would be required to install CNG pumps in order to support the government's program to reduce reliance on gasoline and to reduce pollution in the capital.

He said that about 80 new gasoline stations to be built this year should be already equipped with CNG pumps when they began their operations, while those which have been in operation would be allowed to install the CNG filling facilities in stages.

According to Peni Susanti, the head of the mining department at the Jakarta administration, her office would encourage the use of CNG tanker trucks to distribute the CNG to the gasoline stations which are located far away from gas pipelines so that the supply constraints of the CNG could be minimized.
