A gas blowout has forced PT Medco Energi Internasional Tbk to close a well at its Sanga-Sanga work area in East Kalimantan.

The company said in a statement on Wednesday that the blowout at the 959 well, which occured on Saturday, released natural gas, water and sand up to the height of between 12 and 15 meters.

Medco's subsidiary Medco E&P Indonesia, the well's owner, managed to put out the blowout in Monday morning.

Medco E&P Indonesia has conducted an examination and found no toxic gas either at the well?s area or in the materials flowed into the nearby river.

There was no casualty caused by the incident as villagers live 400 meters from the location.

The 959 well, which before the incident produced 20 barrel per day (bopd), would remain closed for the next couple of days, Medco said.

?Medco E&P Indonesia would repair the well by changing the well head and cementing the wall of the hole,? Medco added. (robert)
