Geothermal plants readied to supply more electricity: PLN

Tuesday, July 9 2002 - 07:48 AM WIB

State electricity company PLN has readied geothermal power plants to produce more electricity in anticipation of a sharp drop in power supply from hydro generators due to prolonged drought, company president Eddie Widiono said on Tuesday.

Eddie said drought had caused a drastic drop in water level at some dams in Indonesia which have power turbines.

PLN will therefore ask operators of geothermal power plants to produde more electricity, Eddie told reporters on the sidelines of a seminar.

Currently, Indonesia has a number of geothermal power plants with a combined capacity of 747.5 megawatts.

The facilities are located in Kamojang, Salak, Darajat and Wayang Windu, all in West Java; and in Lahendong in North Sulawesi; and Sibayak in North Sumatra. (godang)
