German firm considers investment in coal mining

A German trade delegation led by Economic Minister for the Saarland state Poter Georgi have expressed interest to invest in Indonesia's coal mining and toll road development, Bisnis Indonesia reported on Thursday.

Coordinating Minister for Economy Rizal Ramli said that German major coal mining company Saarberg had expressed keen interest in the Ombilin coal mining in South Sumatera while other German company, Kochtransporttechnic GMBH interested in toll road development.

Kochtransporttechnic would continue its toll road project in Bumi Serpong Damai, which had been delayed in the wake of the country's worst ever economic crisis, the chief minister said

Speaking to reporters following his meeting with the German trade delegation, Rizal said that the German investors were ready to bring in fresh funds to Indonesia to support their investment plans.

State owned coal-mining company PT Batubara Bukit Asam, which operates the Ombilin coal mining in South Sumatera, is scheduled to launch its initial public offering in October this year. Rizal, however, did not specifically mentioned if the German firm was interested to participate in Bukit Asam's public offering.

Rizal said that the visiting German trade delegation, which comprises representatives from 24 companies from Saarland state, would also meet Indonesian small and medium scale businessmen during their stay in Indonesia. (*)
