Germany?s ZEMAG eyes coal gasification development in RI

Germany?s ZEMAG Clean Energy Technology GmbH has expressed interest to develop coal gasification project in Indonesia, and is seeking a local partner.

This was said by Director General of Chemical, Textile and Miscellaneous Industries at the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources, Achmad Sigit Dwiwahjono on Thursday. ?We see the coal gasification development in Indonesia to have huge potential. PT Zemag has expressed its interest to invest in Indonesia to develop coal gasification (project),? he said, referring to the local unit of ZEMAG, adding that his office would help search for the local partner.

He said that based on laboratory test, 1,000 tons of coal could produce 3,600 mmbtu of gas per day, with estimated investment of around Rp 13 trillion.

Dwi said that the government has suggested ZEMAG to set up the project in Kalimantan, the country?s key coal producing island.

He added that the gas could be then used as raw material for domestic industries such as fertilizer and methanol plant.

Meanwhile, Managing Director of PT Zemag Clean Energy Technology, Fun Minyan said that Indonesia has huge reserves of low rank coal suitable for coal gasification project.

He said that the company?s planned coal gasification project aimed at producing among others dimethyl ether gas than can substitute LPG so that the country can reduce import of the commodity.
