Gold mining company in S. Sumatera halts operation

PT Barisan Tropikal Mening, a gold mining company based in Lubuk Linggau, South Sumatera has closed down its mining operation after the company found no more significant gold deposit in its mining concession in Karang Muara Jaya district in the regency.

The local government's mining office said on Thursday that the company, which had operated for about seven years in the regency, began to stop its operation on March 15 and formally quit the mining site on April 1.

"About 5,60 of its 600 employees have lost their jobs while the other 100 will be employed by the company's subsidiary PT Barisan Sumatera Mening," the head of the local mining office Fauzi Zakaria said.

However, the head of the local manpower office, Sulli Pandi SA, said that his office had not received any reports about the mining company'' lay-offs. He added that based on his data, the company only employed 280 workers at its mining site. (*)
