The government plans to build a 10 MW gas-fired power plant in Morotai Island Regency, North Maluku Province, this year to increase electricity supply in the region, Investor Daily reported on Wednesday.
The paper quoted Safruddin, Head of the Provincial Mining and Energy Office, as saying that increasing electricity supply is crucial to help lure fresh investment into Morotai, which has been designed to become one of the country?s top 10 tourist destinations. ?Construction of the gas-fired power plant is planned for 2017,? he said.
Safruddin said that power supply capacity in Morotai currently stands at 3 MW, mostly produced from diesel-fired power plant.
He said that the Poland Embassy in Jakarta recently visited Morotai for possible investment in the tourism sector, and one the conditions required is sufficient electricity supply.
He added that investors from a number of countries such as Japan have also expressed interest to develop ocean current power plant in Morotai. (*)
