The government plans to develop marine currents power plant to help increase the role of new and renewable energy sources in the country?s energy mix.

The Directorate General of New and Renewable Energy at the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources said in a statement Friday that in the initial stage a 1 MW pilot project will be developed.

Director of Bioenergy at the Directorate, Tisnaldi said that the country for so many years has been largely depending on fossil energy sources, with little contribution of new and renewable energy sources. He said that it?s now high time to bolster the role of the latter, which in 2013-2014 period only produced 651 MW.
