The government will propose to the House of Representatives to include a chapter on upstream oil and gas supporting industries in the current revision of the 2001 oil and gas law.

This was said by Secretary of the Directorate General of Oil and Gas at the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources, Susyanto, in a statement obtained on Tuesday. He said that the upstream oil and gas supporting services are currently regulated through Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources Regulation No 27/2008, but has yet to be included in the oil and gas law.

He appealed to industry associations to also file a similar request with the House, which initiates the revision of the 2001 oil and gas law.

As has been reported by this portal previously, the Association of Indonesian Oil, Gas, and Geothermal Drilling Companies (APMI) has asked the government and the House to include a clause on upstream oil and gas supporting services in the revision of the 2001 oil and gas law.

Chairman of APMI, Wargono Soenarko said that the acknowledgment in the oil and gas law is important to strengthen the legal position of the APMI members particularly in case of dispute with oil and gas contractors. ?The clause is very crucial so that transaction disputes that have to go through the court can be settled fairly,? he said.

Wargono pointed out that oil and gas contractors to date owe a combined US$300 million of unpaid bills for services rendered by the APMI members.
