Government team to start audit on Freeport next month

A government integrated team will start in the middle of May its job to verify the controversial audit result of giant gold mining firm PT Freeport Indonesia, according to a senior government official.

Director general of mining Surna Tjahjadiningrat was quoted as saying by the Astaga.com online news service that the verification work was expected to be completed on June 20.

Surna said that the government was currently forming the integrated team, which included people from his ministry, the ministry of environment, ministry of internal affairs, ministry of finance, and ministry of law.

He said that the team would not only focus its job on environmental audit, but also on financial, contract, marketing and technique.

He said that the audit made by Montgomery, a consultancy firm appointed by Freeport, which praised Freeport's operation including its environmental management had created a controversy. He said that a different team has verified the audit. (*)
