The Indonesia government said it will this year determine the location of the Cikarang Bekasi Laut (CBL) Inland Waterway, which will link the Cikarang Bekasi industrial area with the coastal ports, including Tanjung Priok port.
The waterway will be developed as an alternative transportation logistic route.
Deputy Minister for Infrastructure and Regional Development Coordination at the Coordinating Ministry for Economic Affairs Wahyu Utomo said his office will discuss the terminal location with related ministries and local governments, Katadata.co.id reported.
Wahyu Utomo said the CBL Waterway terminal has actually been regulated by the Regional Government Regulation (Perda) of Bekasi, West Java province. However, the regulation does not specify the exact location of the CBL terminal.
The CBL Inland Waterway is expected to be built on agriculture land, with projected total area of 35,244 hectares. Therefore, this project must also be discussed with the Agriculture Ministry.
CBL Waterway, which is part of a national strategic project, is expected to reduce congestion on the existing toll-road that linking the Cikarang-Bekasi industrial areas with the international Tanjung Priok port.
Once completed, manufacturers in the Cikarang-Bekasi area could deliver their containers to the Tanjung Priok port via waterway instead of toll road.
The project is planned to be developed in two phases. In the first phase, the Public Works and Public Housing Ministry will develop the existing canal as waterway, linking Cikarang-Bekasi and Marunda in North Jakarta.
In the second phase, the state-owned port operator PT Pelindo II will develop new canal, linking Cibitung-Cikarang in Bekasi and Cikampek in Karawang in West Java with Tanjung Priok port.
The first phase of the CBL waterway is expected to start commercial operation in January 2021. (*)
