The Public Works and Public Housing Ministry (PUPR) has set a plan to develop two new dams in the tourism island of Bali to increase raw water supply.
The PUPR Ministry said the two new dams are part of the 49 new dams to be built by the Joko Widodo government.
“Today, Bali has six dams. All of these (dams) supply the raw water needs, as the growth of tourism also increases the demand for drinking water in Bali,” PUPR Minister Basuki Hadimuljono said in Bali on Friday (15/06).
Of the six dams, one was built in the period of 2015-2019, namely Sidan Dam in Badung Regency.
The other five dams were built before 2015, namely Titab Dam in Buleleng Regency (2011-2015) with storage capacity of 12.67 million cubic meters (m3), Benel Dam in Jembrana (2010) with capacity of 1.62 million m3, Grokgak Dam in Buleleng (1997) with capacity of 2.5 million m3 and Palasari Dam in Jembrana Regency (1989) with capacity of 8 million m3.
The Sidan dam's wall is 68 meters high and has a storage capacity of 3.8 million m3. The water from this dam is supplied to meet the drinking water needs of the people in Badung, Tabanan, Gianyaar and Denpasar, at volume of 1,750 liters per second and generating power plant with capacity of 0.65 MW.
The water from Sidan dam is also used to irrigate paddy fields in several regencies. The government spent Rp786.3 billion to develop the Sidan dam.
