Government to lower prices of fuel, LPG

Amid widespread criticism for his decision to nominate graft suspect Budi Gunawan as the upcoming National Police Chief, President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) announced Thursday plan to cut down the price of the widely used premium gasoline.

Jokowi was quoted by reports as saying that the price of the fuel could go down to between Rp 6,400-Rp 6,500 per liter from the current Rp 7,600 per liter in line with the current drop in global oil prices. Kontan said that the government is expected to announce the new price today (Friday).

Meanwhile, state-owned oil and gas firm PT Pertamina said that it would lower the price of non-subsidized 12-kg liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) canisters by Rp 300 per kg, or Rp 3,600 per canister in line with the falling global price of gas.

Pertamina Marketing and Commercial Director Ahmad Bambang was quoted as saying that the government has approved the plan, expected to be realized soon. (*)
