The government is expected to soon issue a new government regulation to help accelerate the development of geothermal power plants in the country and the accompanying Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources Regulation, Bisnis Indonesia reported on Thursday.
The paper quoted Director of Geothermal at the ministry Yunus Saefulhak as saying that the two new regulations will among others contain fiscal and non-fiscal incentives to accelerate geothermal development.
?The draft of the government regulation on geothermal has entered finalization stage. The regulation will be issued in the near future,? he said.
He added that new government regulation will also contain the geothermal road map, which among others prioritizes the development of geothermal in the eastern part of Indonesia such as East Nusa Tenggara Province. ?Eastern Indonesia requires (more) electricity supply. It so happens that the region has abundant geothermal resources,? Yunus said.
He said that the government will also assign state-owned companies to develop geothermal projects in the country.
The government has set a target for geothermal power plant capacity in the country to increase to 6,300 MW by 2026 from 1,808.5 MW as per October 2017. (*)
