The government of Indonesia welcomes the final ruling of the International Centre for Settlement and Investment Dispute (ICSID) in a coal mining dispute case against UK-based Churchill Mining Plc.

“We have absolutely won the case against Churchill,” said Minister of Law and Human Rights Yasona Laoly in a press conference on Monday.

He said that this is the first case ever won by the government at the ICSID forum.  He said that this proves that the Indonesian government has treated foreign investors in a fair way.

“Initially, there were many people who had doubted that we could win the case,” he added.

As has been previously reported, the ICSID Annulment Committee had on March 18 dismissed Churchill's application for annulment of the December 2016 ruling of ICSID which favors the Indonesian government.

Churchill had previously filed claims worth US$1.3 billion against the Republic of Indonesia at the Singapore-based ICSID for damages arising out of the revocation of the mining licenses that made up the East Kutai Coal Project in East Kalimantan.
