Govt allocates $200 million for unleaded gasoline project

The government has allocated US$200 million obtained from a consortium of overseas lenders for producing unleaded gasoline as part of its program of introducing environment friendly fuels, thus minimizing air pollution in the country, Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources Purnomo Yusgiantoro said on Thursday.

The fund would be used for developing unleaded gasoline producing facilities at Balongan oil refinery in West Java, Purnomo told reporters.

The minister said the engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contract for the unleaded gasoline project had been opened.

The government had planned to eliminate leaded gasoline starting from 2004, and for this, the Ministry of Environment had prepared a decree on tighter vehicle exhaust emission limits which would new vehicles to have catalytic converters starting from 2004. (godang)
