The government has expanded the electricity capacity target to be built under the second phase fast track program to 17,918 MW from the original target of 10,047 MW to help meet growing demand in the country.

This was said by Director General of Electricity, Jarman during a coffee morning session with industry stakeholders on Wednesday held to discuss Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources Regulation No 21/2013, according to a statement issued by the ministry.

Jarman said that electricity consumption in the country has been growing during the past five years. He pointed out that the electricity consumption index was at 693 kwh per capita in 2009, and rose to 856 kwh per capita by end of 2012. The government predicts the figure to further jump to 1,009 kwh per capita next year.
