Govt identifies 24,000 hectares in Java for 100 GW solar power plant

The government has identified around 24,000 hectares of land on Java island that could be used to support President Prabowo Subianto's ambition to develop 100 gigawatts (GW) of solar power capacity, a senior energy official said.

Deputy Energy and Mineral Resources Minister Yuliot Tanjung said the land was identified through a joint mapping effort by the Energy Ministry and the Ministry of Agrarian Affairs and Spatial Planning/National Land Agency (ATR/BPN).

"Based on the identification we carried out jointly with the ATR/BPN Ministry, around 24,000 hectares of land are available on Java island," Yuliot said on Monday.

The planned 100 GW solar power programme forms part of Prabowo's push to expand the use of solar energy and strengthen domestic energy security while increasing the share of renewable energy in Indonesia's power mix.

"The nearest priority is implementing the president's directive for 100 GW of solar power. Through this programme, we will utilise solar energy as a domestic energy source," Yuliot said.

Indonesia, one of the world's largest greenhouse gas emitters, has pledged to accelerate renewable energy development as it seeks to reduce its reliance on coal-fired power generation.

Yuliot said the government was preparing a presidential regulation aimed at accelerating the implementation of the 100 GW solar programme.

As an initial phase, the government plans to fast-track the development of 17 GW of solar power capacity supported by about 33 GW of battery energy storage systems, he added.

Large-scale solar deployment would also require substantial investment in supporting infrastructure, including transmission networks and substations, to integrate the new capacity into the national electricity grid.

"We need supporting infrastructure such as transmission systems and substations. The power plants that will be built across these 24,000 hectares must be interconnected with the grid," Yuliot said.

The government has not disclosed a timeline or investment value for the 100 GW solar power programme.
