The research and development department of the ministry of energy and mineral resources will cooperate with Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) to develop a coal-fired power plant in Tenggarong, Kutai Kartanegara, East Kalimantan.

JICA through Japan Coal Energy Center (JCOAL) and Nippon Koei Co Ltd will build a power plant which will have a capacity of 2 x 50 megawatt near the Mahakam river and will use a mix of coal waste and low grade coal as its fuel, the head of the research and department at the ministry of energy and mineral resources, Nenny Sri Utami said during a workshop held by Pertamina in Bali Thursday.

The project will be funded by JICA and it take cost between US$75 and $80 million per 50 MW, she said

"The construction of the power plant will cost about US$1.5 million per MW, much higher than about $1 million per MW in ordinary coal-fired power plant," she added.

Nenny said that the feasibility study on the construction of the power plant was underway and she hoped that the power plant could begin operation in late 2009 or in 2010. (godang)
