Central Java provincial administration may choose to build a solar power plant as the most affordable alternative in providing the power supply for Karimunjawa island, located about 90 kilometer from Jepara town, Bisnis Indonesia reported.

The plan to build the solar power plant was made after the local legislative council disapproved the local government?s plan to allocate about Rp 3 billion in the province?s budget for the construction of an undersea cable to supply the electricity to the resort island.

The local legislators said that the installation of the undersea cable would be too expensive. Due to this reason, the local government was asked to consider the possibility of building s solar power plant.

At present, the island relies only on six diesel power generators which could only provide power for six hours.(*)
