Govt plans to build 5000 MW power plant in Cilacap

The government has decided to build a giant coal fired power plant, with a capacity of 5x1000 MW, in Cilacap, Central Java to meet the fastly-growing demand for power in Java.

The decision was made during a coordination meeting involving several ministers and senior military member held on Thursday at the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources, the ministry said in a statement.

Participants in the meeting were among others Coordinating Minister of Maritime Affairs Indroyon Soesilo, Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources Sudirman Said, Minsiter of Law and Human Rights Yasonna H. Laoly, Minister of Agrarian and Spatial Planning Ferry Musyidan Baldan, Head of the National Land Agency (BPN) Hendarman Supandji, and Army Chief of Staff Gen. Moeldoko and President Director of state owned electricity firm PT Perusahaan Listrik Negara (PLN).

The power plant will be built not far from the existing PLTU Cilacap. It will be equipped with ultra supercritical technology, Sudirman said.

The government expects the first phase of the project, two units with a combined capacity of 2000 MW, can be completed by 2018, he added.
