The government plans to start construction of the Trans Kaltim gas pipeline in gas-rich East Kalimantan province next year.

Director General of Oil and Gas IGN Wiratmaja Puja said in a statement late last week that construction of the Trans Kaltim pipeline is expected to be completed in five years.

He said that in the first stage, a pipeline linking Handil and Samarinda will be developed, to be later linked with Balikpapan and Kutai Kertanegara.

Wiratmaja said that while East Kalimantan has plenty of gas reserves, lack gas infrastructure facilities in the province have hampered gas utilization.

He said that pipeline linking to power plants will also be developed to allow the plants to switch from diesel fuel to gas. He said that about 100 mmscfd of gas has been allocated for power plants in the province.

He added that city gas networks are also being developed to increase gas consumption by household consumers. More gasoline stations will also be developed.
