Govt prepares CBM rig specification

The government is designing a specification of rigs needed for development of the coalbed methane (CBM).

?The government is determined to prepare a specification of rigs for CBM activities, so that CBM wells can quickly start production,? said the energy and mineral resources ministry?s Oil and Gas Technique and Environment Director Edi Purnomo during a meeting on CBM rig specifications recently in Jakarta.

The ministry?s Oil and Gas Upstream Safety Sub-division Head Patuan Alfon added that the government needed to analyze the geological risks so that all CBM developers would know all of the geologically potential danger in their respective concessions. By knowing the potential danger, they can make necessary adjustments of their use of rigs in developing their concessions.

CBM is natural gas that is dominated by methane gas and small amount of hydrocarbon and non-hydrocarbon elements resulted from chemical and physical processes. Basically, the CBM is similar with the conventional gas, but the difference is that CBM is associated with coal as its source rock and reserve, while the conventional gas is produced from sand reserves, limestones, or other stone rifts. The other difference is in the way they will be explored and exploited. The CBM will need a dewatering process, while the conventional gas will not need it.

Since 2008 until now there have been 50 working areas (WK) of CBM signed. From this year to 2025, the government has targeted to sign 210 working areas of CBM, or about 15 WKs every year.

Based on Indonesian roadmap of CBM development, the production of CBM is expected to reach 1.000 mmscfd in 2020 and 1.500 mmscfd in 2025.

Indonesia?s potential reserve of CBM is estimated at 453,3 tcf in 11 hydrocarbon basins across the country. Of the total, 112,47 tcf is proven reserve, while the other 57,60 tcf is potential reserve.
