Govt sets locations for Phase Two10,000 MW crash program

The locations of the new power projects are stipulated in the Energy and Mineral Resources Minister?s Decree No.2, 2010.
Director General of Electricity and Energy Utilzation at the Energy and Mineral Resources Ministry, J. Purwono, said in Jakarta on Friday that power plants to be built under the Phase Two crash program was expected to produce 10,153 MW of power supply.
Of the total power production, 5,770 MW would be supplied to the Java and Bali power grid, while the other 4,383 MW will be used to cope with the power shortage outside Java and Bali.
Geothermal power plants will account for 39 percent of the total power plants to be built under the program, hydropower plant 12 percent, coal-fired power plants 33 percent and gas-fired power plants 16 percent.
The total investment needed for the second electricity crash program will reach about US$16.34 billion. Of the total, about $15.96 billion will be used for the construction of power plants and the other $383 million for the construction of supporting facilities such as power grids.
Under the program, PLN will build 21 power plants comprising of 11 geothermal power plants, 2 hydropower plants, 6 coal-fired power plants, 1 gas-fired power plant and 1 combined cycle power plant.
The projects include coal-fired PLTU Indramayu plant with a capacity of 1 x 1,000 MW, coal-fired PLTU Takalar with a capacity of 2 x 100 MW. Geothermal power plants to be built by PLN will produce 880 megawatt.
?We hope the auction of the geothermal power plants can be carried out this year,? Purwono said.
Meanwhile, private investors will build 72 power plants, comprising of 33 geothermal power plants, 1 hydropower plant, 36 coal-fired power plants and 2 combined cycle power plants. (*)
