The government plans to invest some US$18 billion in the country's power sector over the next 10 years, according to Endro Utomo Notodisuryo, commissioner of the state-owned electricity company PLN.

Endro was quoted as saying by the Detik.com online news service that the investment was needed to anticipate the growing power demand.

He said that with an average 4 percent economic growth until 2004, and 8 percent until 2010, power demand growth would be around 9 percent per year until 2010.

He said that the investment would be focused on power generating and transmission projects.

Endro said that foreign investors would be allowed to participate up to 95 percent in domestic power generating projects, while PLN would control the power transmission project. (*)
