The office of the state minister for the acceleration of development in eastern Indonesia is seeking ways to accelerate the implementation of mining investment plans by 22 firms to boost economic growth in the area.
Deputy of the office Made Astawa Rai was quoted by the Media Indonesia daily as saying that mining sector played a crucial role for economic growth due to its significant investments.
He said that the long-awaited approval by the central government for open pit mining activity on the Gag Island in Papua province bode well for the plan.
He also said that his office would lobby the House of Representatives commission III in charge of environmental issues because many mining investors faced difficulties in realizing their investment plans due to environmental issues.(*)
