Govt to require big industry, industrial estate to build own power plants

Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources is currently drafting a regulation that will require big industrial estate developers and big industry to build power plants to meet their own electricity requirement, Kontan daily reported.

Director General of Electricity Jarman said that the ministerial decree is expected to be issued this year and will take effect next year.

The proposed decree is one the strategies to cut down subsidy and to cut dependency on state electricity firm PT Perusahaan Listrik Negara (Persero).

Under the proposed decree, developers will be able to sell electricity directly to their customers. (*)
