Govt to team up with Chinese firms to develop coal-fired power plants

Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources Purnomo Yusgiantoro said on Wednesday that three Chinese companies; Harbin Electric Inc., Shanghai Electric and Dongfang Electric corp. would be appointed by Indonesian government to help Indonesia to develop 10,000-MW of coal-fired power plant, Bisnis Indonesia reported.

Purnomo said in Beijing when accompanying VP Jusuf Kalla?s visit to China that the deal to develop the power plants could be signed in August this year. He said that the deal would worth between US$6-7 billion.

The government had embarked on an ambitious plan to develop up to 10,000-MW `coal-fired power plant across the archipelago within the next five years in a bid to lessen dependency on fuel and to cater for soaring electricity demand.

The government had recently issued policy that would enable state electricity firm PLN to issue government-backed bond to finance the plants? construction. (*)
