A compressed natural gas (CNG) facility in Gresik, East Java, is targeted to start operation in June of next year to support the 300 MW PLTGU Gresik coal-fired power plant, Kompas.com reported on Monday.

?With the operation of the CNG facility in June 2016, the PLTGU Gresik will no longer use diesel fuel as it will entirely be run on gas,? said Amin Subekti, Business Director for East Java and Bali regions at state-owned electricity company PT PLN, adding that the switch into gas will save cost about Rp 2.35 billion per day because it?s cheaper than diesel fuel.

He added that going forward, the CNG from Gresik will also be transported using a special vessel to Lombok in West Nusa Tenggara as fuel for a 1.5 MW gas fired power plant on Bawean Island.

Amin said that the special marine CNG vessel is currently being developed in China. (*)
