The Gresik CNG plant in East Java owned by public utility PT Perusahaan Listrik Negara (PLN) (Persero) is now in the final phase of commissioning and is scheduled to start operation in early April, PLN said in a statement on Thursday.

Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources Sudirman Said accompanied by PLN?s Business Director of Eastern Java and Bali Amin Subekti inspected the plant on Thursday.

The CNG plant located at PLTGU Gresik power plant owned by PLN was built to provide gas for the power plant and thus allows PLN to reduce the plant?s oil fuel consumption. It is expected that the power plant will fully use gas at peak load.

At peak load of 300 MW, the power plant can reduce oil fuel consumption by 450 kl worth around Rp 2.25 billion per day. The CNG production of the plant can also be shipped to nearby Bawean Island to the north of Gresik.

PLN noted that gas is a clean energy. Since it is a clean energy, the operation and maintenance cost of gas-fired power plant is relatively low.

In the future, PLN will also bring the CNG production from the plant to Lombok in West Nusa Tenggara province using CNG vessels for power plants there.

PLN also said it has completed the construction of several substations in East Java, including the GI Sambikerep substation (2x60 MVA), GI Sidoarjo (1x60 MVA) and the uprating of GTI Bulu Kandang from 30 MVA to 60 MVA. East Java now experiences a power surplus of 2600 MW with installed capacity of 8600 MW and daily peak load of 6000 MW.

Several power plant projects are scheduled to enter the East Java-Bali system in the future, including PLTU Tanjung Awar Awar Unit II with a capacity of 350 MW (projected to be completed on June 30, 2016), PLTGU Grati Peaker with a capacity of 450 MW (projected to be completed at end-2017) and PLTU Adipala with a capacity of 1x660 MW (projected to be completed on Aug. 31, 2016)
