The Directorage General of General Mining has submitted a guide for the implementation of autonomy law to the minister of energy and mineral resources, and currently it is waiting for the minister's approval, according to an official.

Ukar W. Soelistijo, an expert staff at the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources, said that his office was currently processing ministerial decrees to implement the autonomy law. He added that his office used all the inputs from the society in the processing of all decrees supporting the autonomy.

The core of the autonomy law for his office would be the transfer of authority in the mining sector as this sector is seen as an effective tool to empower local administrations to generate their own income.

He noted that investment in the mining sector in 1999 reached US$12.002 billion, while the value of contract of works extended by the government that year reached $102.787 million and Rp 141.174 billion. (*)
