Gulf helps farmers and breeders, provides scholarship

Canadian oil and gas company Gulf Indonesia Resources would send 40 farmers and breeders mostly from Ramba and Grissik villages, in Musa Banyuasin regency in South Sumatra to Bogor, West Java for two-week training starting Feb. 24 this year.
"After the training program, they will receive capitals (from Gulf) for their works and we keep monitoring them," company vice president Supramu Santoso said on Monday during a visit on the rector of the University of Sriwijaya in Indralaya, Ogan Komering Ilir, South Sumatra.
"We spend hundreds of millions of rupiah for that, " Supramu said, adding the program was part of the company's social care activities, while doing its core oil and gas business in the province.
He said Gulf would also cooperate with the Sriwijaya University to implement its community development program in the province.
He said Gulf thus far focused attention to the people around Musi Banyuasin area, where the company has a gas operation, in its community development program but the company looked forward to expanding the program to other areas.
On the short term, the company disburse scholarship for 150 well-performed students, including 50 students from Musi Banyuasin. The students will receive Rp 100,000 in monthly schlarship starting from March this year.
He said Gulf also wished to cooperate with the university in carrying out environmental studies, management training, public health promotion, apprenticeship and financial helps for students to complete studies.
The rector of the university, Zainal Ridho Jakfar, welcome the company's cooperation proposal. (*)
