ASX-listed manganese smelter company Gulf Manganese Corp Ltd is expected to start its smelter operation in the second half of 2016 once the AMDAL environmental license is obtained, according to Gulf's CEO Hamish J Bohannan.

"We will start the operation in second half on the year after obtaining AMDAL license from the (local) regent," Bohannan said to Petromindo.com on Wednesday.

Gulf Manganese plans to build the first ferromanganese (FeMn) smelting complex in Kupang, West Timor regency. The company has secured the first unit of the smelter from South Africa and refurbished it in Indonesia.

Bohannan said that the initial FeMn alloy production target is about 15,000 tons per annum, and may be increased up to 155,000 tons per annum.
