Gulf provides free medical services in North Jakarta

Gulf Indonesia Resources, one of state oil company Pertamina's contractors, has recently provided a free medical service to the people living in slump areas in Pluit, Jakarta, Neraca daily reported on Monday.

Saridjono Sarwoko, the company's senior public relations official, said over the weekend that the free medical service involved at least 60 physicians, 40 paramedics and students, were carried out in the Muara Angke and surrounding slump areas.

The free medical services was part of the company's community development program, which was not only carried out to help residents living near industrial projects but also the needy people in other places such as the residents living in Muara Angke, he said.

The workers have raised about Rp 84 million from their own salaries to finance the free medical service while the company provided another Rp 84 million from its own budget, he said, adding that the workers have carried out a number of social programs since 1998 to help the poor cope with rising living costs due to the crisis.
