Gunung Bayan fails to transport coal due to dry season

Coal mining company PT Gunung Bayan Pratama Coal has been unable to transport its coal from its mining site in the Muara Pahu district, East Kalimantan to the seaport due the lowering of the surface level of the Kedung Pahu river following a long dry season in the province.

Industry sources told Petromindo.Com the company was continuing its coal production but it piled up the coal along the river?s banks. The river is a branch of the province's largest Mahakam river.

The company produces 250,000 tons per month.

According to the sources, the company is likely to declare force majeure on its supply contracts to the Japanese buyers, if the bad situation persists.

The ministry of energy and mineral resources? data say the company is owned by PT Kaltim Bara Sentosa (60 percent), Low Tuck Kwong (30 percent), and Engki Wibowo (10 percent). (Godang/Alex)
