Gurita buys handymax to tap booming coal transportation

Local shipping firm PT.Gurita Lintas Samudera has purchased a handymax bulk vessel to be operated to transport coal within Indonesia, Bisnis Indonesia reported.
Gurita CEO Soenarto Sangat said the Indonesian flagged 43,000- DWT vessel which was renamed MV Zaleha Fitrat was bought for US$16 million. Zaleha had arrived in Cigading port in Banten early this week.
Soenarto said the vessel would be used to transport coal from South Kalimantan to power plants such as Suralaya in Banten.
Gurita has been involved in coal transportation since 2005, when it purchased five sets of tugs and barges to carry coal from Kotabaru to Suralaya. (*)
