Hanson enters coal mining business

JSX-listed textile maker PT. Hanson International Tbk has diverted from its core business and has entered into coal mining business.

The company said in a statement filed with the JSX on Tuesday that its unit PT. Hanson Energy has acquired two coal mining concessions in South Sumatra.

The company said the first concession was in 10,000 hectares of land in Ogan Komering Ulu regency, with mineable reserves of 46 million tonnes. The company has commenced mining in an area of 500 hectares. The mining concession is located some 220 kilometers from Tarahan coal port in Lampung. The company did not give production figures.

The second concession is located in Baturaja regency, covering an area of 20,000 hectares with mineable reserves estimated at around 80 million tonnes, the company said.

Company’s Director Harun Setiawan Boedi was quoted by Kontan daily as saying that Hanson is participating in coal supply tender held by state electricity firm PLN.(alex)
