Chairman of upstream oil and gas authority SKK Migas Dwi Soetjipto inaugurated on Wednesday a second household gas pipeline network in Balikpapan, East Kalimantan Province, to distribute gas to 5,000 households.
The Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources said in a statement that the first household gas pipeline network in Balikpapan was completed in 2016 serving 3,849 households.
The ministry added that also on Wednesday the first household gas pipeline network in Penajam Paser Utara Regency, East Kalimantan, was inaugurated by Jugi Prajogio, Committee Member of the downstream oil and gas regulator BPH Migas. The gas pipelines will distribute gas to 4,260 households in the regency.
Household gas pipeline networks (also known here as jargas) developed in East Kalimantan have already covered a total of 34,574 households.
The government has been developing household gas pipeline networks in the country in a bid to push more households to switch into natural gas from LPG, which is mostly still imported.
From 2009 to 2018, the government has developed household gas pipeline networks in 40 regencies/mayoralties in 16 provinces, covering a total of 352,852 households.
This year, the government plans to develop new jargas for 78,216 households in 18 regencies/mayoralties.
