Thousands of households in Batam, Riau Islands Province, has started receiving gas supply following the completion of the construction of gas pipeline network by IDX-listed gas distribution firm PT PGN Tbk.
A ceremony was dedicated on Thursday to inaugurate the gas pipeline network connected to 4,001 households in Batam, led by Director General of Oil and Gas IGN Wiratmaja Puja, the directorate said in a statement obtained Friday.
The statement said that the gas pipeline network in Batam was constructed in 2016, funded by the state budget. The gas supply comes from JOB Pertamina-Talisman Jambi Merang.
The government started developing gas pipeline networks in the country since 2009, starting in Surabaya and Palembang as pilot projects, in a bid to push households to switch to natural gas to help cut down import costlier LPG.
Total gas pipeline networks developed during 2016 covered 88,915 household connections in six cities including Tarakan, Surabaya, Batam, Prabumulih, Cilegon and Balikpapan. PT PGN was assigned to develop in Batam, Surabaya and Tarakan.
