Hundreds of coal mining employees stage demonstration at parliament

Hundreds of employees of PT Thiess Contractor Indonesia (TCI), the main contractor for the local coal project of Australia-based BHP mining group, staged on Friday a demonstration at the local Kotabaru parliament in South Kalimantan.
The protesters demanded the company to provide better welfare and working hours, and improve working security condition.
The employees had made the protest for a week.
The protesting employees where the former employees of coal mining firm PT Arutmin Indonesia. The latter transferred its employees to TCI following a joint venture deal with BHP to develop a coal project in the Kotabaru regent.
The demonstration was also held to protest a decision by TCI to fire four employees who had been asking for a better welfare status and working condition. (*)
