The Indonesia Mining Association (IMA) anticipates an increase in prices of several mineral products such as nickel and iron ores this year due to the projected increase in the demand, Kontan reported on Tuesday.

Tony Wenas, the vice chairman of the association, said in Jakarta on Monday the demand of most mineral products was expected to begin to increase this year while the supply would remain tight as many miners which stopped their operations last year due to the sharp fall in prices, had not resumed their normal operations.

The tight supply would result in increase in prices of several mineral commodities such as nickel and iron ores, he added. The price of nickel has reached US$18,500 per ton, an 8.8 percent increase from $17,000 per ton last year, while the price of iron ores has increased to $140 per ton from $100 per ton, last year, he added.

Tony expected that the rise in prices of mineral commodities would continue at least until the end of this year. (*)
