IMK vows to rehabilitate ex-mining site

Gold mining firm PT Indo Muro Kencana plans to start rehabilitating its ex-mining site in Barito Utara regency in Central Kalimantan early next year through land reclamation method, according to head of the provincial mining office Nawawi Mahmuda.

He was quoted by the local Banjarmasin Post daily as saying Friday that the land reclamation program would first focus on a 700 thousand ha site.

He said that the rehabilitation measure would help turn part of the site to become arable for local people and some to be replanted with trees to help protect the environement.

Indo Muro Kencana is wholly owned subsidiary of Australian miner Aurora Gold Ltd. The company plans to stop its gold mine operation in the second quarter of 2002.(*)
