Inalum completes FS for power plant project

State-owned aluminum producer PT Indonesia Asahan Aluminium (Inalum) said it has completed the feasibility study (FS) for a planned 2x350 MW coal-fired power plant project in North Sumatra.

Inalum President Director Winardi said in a statement obtained on Wednesday that the new power plant is needed to support the company?s plan to double production capacity of its aluminum plant in Kuala Tanjung, Batu Bara Regency, North Sumatra Province, from 250,000 tons per year to 500,000 tons in 2021.

Winardi said that the company is currently in the process of completing the various required permits, a process expected to be concluded in the third quarter of this year.

He said that Inalum is also seeking partner for the planned power plant project through various schemes including a build, operate and transfer scheme, under which the plant will be develop by a third party and Inalum acts as the off-taker.

Inalum, which currently has two hydro power plants, requires additional power supply of 350 MW to support the capacity expansion of its aluminum production facility.
